This essay concerns the origin and significance of the Wu Xing or the Five Elements of Chinese tradition. The philosophy of the five elements is central to an understanding of a whole range of traditional Chinese healing, martial and spiritual disciplines. These include Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Feng Shui and Qi Gong. The Five Elements are also at the heart of the extensive system of Chinese ritual magic and divination. They provide the theoretical basis of the I Ching, a classic of philosophy and a unique divinatory system. In short the theory of the five elements stands at the centre of one of the great humanistic and spiritual traditions of the world.
